The Artist

Carly Isabel (B. 2000, American) is a painter and illustrator inspired by storytelling. She is currently living in Australia as she graduated in 2024 for her BFA in Drawing and Painting with an emphasis in Illustration at Laguna College of Art and Design. Her work follows a unique tale about the discovery of nature’s seasons through a collection of paintings and a series of writings.

Influenced by the Romanticism art movement, the subjects in Carly’s paintings are portrayed in a focused yet subliminal manner. One of her focuses as an artist is to create a more sustainable practice during her painting process. She connects most with her work when her art acts as a placeholder for words.

Artist Statement

I find myself reading paintings as if they were pieces of Literature. I’ve always struggled to hold onto words past their initial read, so I’ve turned my artistic practice into a form of storytelling that doesn’t necessarily need words in order to convey a personal visual language. Depicting scenes that encapsulate my literary narratives, I find that the beauty of reading a painting lies in ones ability to see through a child’s eye. From a very early age, I always felt safest in the arms of Mother Nature and I like to think of my art as her story of growing up.

“I think I’ll write a story. It will have chapters, moon phases, and the changing of seasons. And at the end, you’ll find the beginning.”
